<div style="text-align: center;"><strong><span style="font-size: large;">Welcome Home Jasper!!</span></strong></div><br />
<br />
Well.... Since having to put Glacier down this past summer we've been thinking about getting another dog. We've discussed it quite a few time and we've been actively looking for another addition to our family but we decided that we'd hold off for a little while because we already had two active pups (Darby & Bailey), and two pups are easier than three active pups.... right? <br />
<br />
With the sudden passing of Darby a little over a week ago we knew in our hearts it was time to get another. This past week was difficult for Bailey, she's been very depressed this past week and we can tell she missed Darby as much as we do. The timing was right and Jasper fell into our lives the same day Darby died... fate? <br />
<br />
It's been a long time since we've had a puppy, just about 14 years to be exact. It's going to be trying, it will be a challenge no doubt... but we are dedicated to being successful. We're dedicated to making Jasper successful as well. He's been home with us for two days now and he's beginning to fit right in. He sleeps, eats, pees, poops, plays and chews... just like any puppy. He's just 8 weeks old and has lots to learn. Right now he's on about a 2 hour shift at night to go out so no one is really sleeping. We're getting him use to his crate and that will take a little time but we're doing it. In two days he's only had 2 accidents in the house (our fault) but if you take him outside, he goes! Bailey is starting to get use to the idea he is not a toy and is starting to show signs of playfulness with Jasper. They'll be great playmates for sure!<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> This past summer we almost rescued an Australian Shepherd but it ended up falling through when we didn't hear back from the local owner. Through that time we were able to research the breed and have quickly fallen in love with it and we firmly believe it is a great breed for us. It's amazing how everything falls into place.</div><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">For the past 8 years we've been rescuing dogs, specifically Weimaraners. We've come to love the breed, the activity level, and the rescue we've been working with.... after all, we're still weim owners. It was a tough decision to go with a breed other than a weim because they've been such a big part of who we are. To be quite honest, because of the "bloat" factor, we're a bit gun-shy of the top breeds that are associated with common bloating issues. Maybe we're trying to play it safe?? Below is a reference list we've found and in our experience this seems to be pretty accurate. We've lost 2 weims in recent years to bloat and growing up I lost a German Shepherd to bloat and honestly don't know if we can deal with it again. It's been pretty traumatic for our family including the kids.<em> </em></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Darby - RIP 12/9/2011</td></tr>
</tbody></table> We just wanted to take a chance to say thanks to everyone that wished us well in the tough time. Losing Darby to bloat was very difficult. Bloat is a scary thing, something every single one of us Weim families fear. It's tragic and quick and that's want makes it even worse. One minute they're fine, the next they're in distress.<br />
<br />
We did everything "anti-bloat" by the book with our weims since losing Kam. We had scheduled feeding, drinks, relax time, diet, all that stuff. On the morning of Darby's death she was fine. She was sick and vomited a few time during the day but she also layed with Amy and slept as well. In the middle of the night she started going downhill quick. We made the call to the vet down the street at 1:00am but they were in surgery and could not take Darby in. We found another emergency vet 45 minutes away but by the time I got there it was to late and I was forced to make a decision that I didn't want to. I came home that night by myself.<br />
<br />
No one knows exactly what causes bloat. Amy and I were fortunate enough to run into one of the best vet's in the country this past weekend (<span class="st"><strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Robert Hutchison) </strong>a</span>nd we had the chance to discuss bloat with him. His office (actually his son - <strong>Dr. Randy Hutchison</strong> ) is one of the few doctors in the country that performs a non-invasive stomach-tacking that prevents torsion (or twisting) of the stomach during bloat. Once your dog starts to bloat and the stomach twists the surgery will cost you $5,000!! That's right, 5-grand! lot's of zeros. For about 20% of that you can be proactive and have this surgery performed and save your pet's life. If they bloat and you get to a vet they can tube the dog and release the gas....the dog won't die that horrific death which is commonly associated with bloat. you can contact them below - I wanted to share this info.<br />

It seem to me that $1000 is worth the investment.. after all, I took Darby to the vet and came home without here for $500... You do the calculation.<br />

We're lucky enough to have a friend that has a cabin in northern Michigan. It's about 20 miles east of Grayling along the Au Sable River.... Quite beautiful I must say. We've been there a couple times now and love it... The pups love it too! The freedom, the smells, the sounds.... it's almost overwhelming for them!<br />

<br />
It's not that I don't want to, it's that I'm so busy and have many irons in the fire that sometimes I just can't keep track of everything... My photography has been keeping me really busy this year (which is a good thing) but I'm gonna try to get back here and blog about these two crazy weims. Besides, we have a small urban farm here that's been taking some of my time! More to come on that too! let's just say..... ummmm...uhhhhhh....chickens!?<br />
<br />
Anyway, we just got back from a few days in Northern Michigan and I have a few pictures of the pups I'd like to share. Once I get them off the camera tonight I'll get them posted. The dogs had a great time that's for sure. All those smells, well, it drove Bailey nuts! She was like a crack head needing a fix every time we took her out on a hike, he nose sounded like a vacuum!!<br />
<br />
Oh, did I tell you we thought about getting another pup?? Well, we were really close to picking up an addition to our family however the one we were thinking about never came though for us so we're kinda in a holding pattern. It was a Australian shepherd/Sheltie mix. We bumped into a guy that had one but I was not ready to make a decision on the spot .... so I gave him my number and told him to call me in a week... he never did. My family wasn't very happy with me and I regret not inquiring more. Guess it wasn't meant to be though...<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I'll try to get some pictures posted in a day or two of our recent trip north.<br />
<br />
<br />
Enough about me, how have you all been??? I've been trying to catch up on all your blogs to see what's been going on.Seanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06063540936979928724noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4736971304720448145.post-42694411796565646092011-09-19T14:52:00.000-04:002011-09-19T14:52:52.606-04:00B-L-O-A-T ! ! ! ! ! I know it's been quite a while since I've posted anything but I juts wanted to share a quick little message today - We just about lost Darby this weekend. Those of you that know us know that we lost one of our Weims [Kam] to bloat a few years ago. I tried to comfort him in his last minutes of life on this earth and I swore I wouldn't go through that again, nor would I let any of my pets go through that again. We found ourselves in a position this past weekend that we hoped we'd never have to go through again... and that was BLOAT!<br />
<br />
Amy's sister lives in Pennsylvania, smack-dab in the middle of the disaster zone... the flood zone. She recently found the swollen Susquehanna river in her back yard and ultimately in her house a little over a week ago. We made a decision to pack up the family and the dogs and dart back home to PA (where we're from) to help with the disaster recovery this past Friday evening only to find ourselves in trouble as well. See, during the night while we were sleeping there was an unforeseen tragedy about to happen..... and that was Bloat. Darby got into a bag of dog food and almost ate herself to death while we slept just feet away from her. We're not sure exactly how much she ate but it was quite a bit from what we can tell. We rushed her in to an emergency vet clinic and they took an X-ray of her stomach which showed no twisting. Long story short = Darby did bloat, but the stomach did not twist. As of today, she's back to nomal!Seanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06063540936979928724noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4736971304720448145.post-82099731247032726792011-07-29T09:28:00.000-04:002011-07-29T09:28:34.347-04:00Time to say goodbye...<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wCjZuQe8sLk/TjKwA_qHmnI/AAAAAAAABbw/NHHXQ3jsAyc/s1600/glacier1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="331" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wCjZuQe8sLk/TjKwA_qHmnI/AAAAAAAABbw/NHHXQ3jsAyc/s400/glacier1.JPG" t$="true" width="400" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><strong>Glacier ("G" / G-Dog) - 9/26/1997 - 7/28/2011 R.I.P</strong></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

Well, I realized that it's only been over 3 months since we posted anything here so I thought I should probably add something?? There are many reasons for my lack of posting but mainly because I've been so busy with my photography and wrapped up in that that this has fallen by the wayside. Even my <a href="http://www.seanswatsky.com/">photography</a> blog has been stagnant and I feel terrible about that!<br />
<br />
Like most people living in the Midwest, it's been hot as hell! It was 99 degrees last week, 90% humidity, and a heat index of 115 degrees... and yet Bailey would rather be outside than in side in the air conditioning?? Darby on the other hand, she'd rather be inside on the couch much like myself... I keep reminding myself that in just a few months the snow is gonna fly once again and we'll all be complaining about the cold and crappy weather.<br />
<br />
Once in a while I'll bring Bailey in the pool to let her cool off a bit and enjoy in a few laps. This time I thought why not see if she likes the raft? You guessed it, she does as you can see the snapshot above!<br />
<br />
Not sure if you remember or not but back in April we posted about us getting chickens right here in Cleveland. We started off with 6 one day old chicks and recently found out that 2 were roosters. We gave the roosters to a local family so we're down to 4 now. Bailey almost ate one when they were chicks but i think she's now desensitized to them from seeing them every day. I wouldn't let her alone with though!! I thought I'd post a picture on how big they are already.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><strong>Yep - From This:</strong></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-L66dINAYzWo/TZ9Eq0ZYbBI/AAAAAAAABVE/3KU6EsqfJOA/s1600/photo111.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="298" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-L66dINAYzWo/TZ9Eq0ZYbBI/AAAAAAAABVE/3KU6EsqfJOA/s400/photo111.JPG" t$="true" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

<br />
So how's your summer going so far? I can't believe how quickly this summer is going and before ya know it, school time!<br />

So Bailey, as it turns out, is officially our watch dog. She sits by the back window and waits..... and watches... cautiously.... for any slight movement. Then BLAMMO! Commence barking!<br />
<br />
In the picture below you can see Bailey resting her nose on the window to the point her nose is crunched up. She'll sit like this for minutes just watching for a bird or better yet, her favorite..... a squirrel!! This dog is a squirrel addict! We also know she is a chicken addict as well.....<br />
<br />

<br />
I feel bad that I have not been posting as much lately, but this winter has kicked my butt. And now raising the chickens it's a bit crazy. The good news is that warmer weather is coming, less rain, and the chickens will be out in their coop! Can't wait to get to the beach with the pups soon!!!<br />
<br />
We're going to have a special visit this weekend from my sister and she's bringing Brutus the rottie along!! Bailey, Darby, and Glacier have not seen him since he was a pup.... We'll see how it goes!? I'm guessing that they'll be fine since they have met in the past and we all know dogs do not forget! It needs to go well because Lisa is watching the weims for a week when we go to the beach this summer.... As you can see below, Brutus is NOT a puppy any more! You can see more about Brutus on her blog at <a href="http://rottenspoiledrottie.blogspot.com/">http://rottenspoiledrottie.blogspot.com/</a><br />

<br />
Anyway, Lisa started making homemade dog treats and we ( Bailey, Darby, and Glacier) taste tested them this weekend. We LOVE THEM!!! We received a shipment to our door and the pups went nutz!! You can visit her blog at <a href="http://rottenspoiledrottie.blogspot.com/">http://rottenspoiledrottie.blogspot.com/</a><br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://rottenspoiledrottie.blogspot.com/"><img border="0" height="400" r6="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-icVrQpaW5Bs/TaxqP7bLyjI/AAAAAAAABWM/IRibSXVaXO0/s400/SRDT.JPG" width="317" /></a></div><br />
Her product is called "<strong><span style="font-size: large;">Spoiled Rotten Homemade Dog Treats</span></strong>" and they are available for sale and shipped to your door! Great name by the way, as referenced to her Spoiled Rotten Rottie!! Check out her blog for different flavors (shapes & sizes) that are available. I really like the tiny bones which are perfect for training treats! Everything is designed, baked, cut, and shipped - by her! Support my sis! Seriously though, our dogs love them and you can watch a video of them chompin' away!<br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"> Wow, that could have been really bad!! I "introduced" the pups to the chickens last night. Darby smelled the chicks and turned around and walked away... kinda what I expected. Bailey on the other hand! "Holy Cow" is all I can say! I left her get a sniff or two of the chicks, then she got shark eyes and started licking her chops. In a matter of half-a-second she tried to snatch it out of my hand! I'm just glad I had a good grip on the chick because Bailey was thinking it was dinner or something! I mean, she was on that bird like I couldn't even believe... There were a few screams from the kids, a few squeals from the chick, and me yelling at the top of my lungs.. As Amy put it, if things had gone differently there would have been a need for some serious therapy in our house!!</div><br />
<br />
I'm glad to report that everyone is fine and I think I'll wait a few weeks until the birds are a lil bigger to introduce them again!Seanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06063540936979928724noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4736971304720448145.post-78168067958598714522011-04-12T14:24:00.000-04:002011-04-12T14:24:47.973-04:00Chicken & Weims<div style="text-align: center;">What the heck have we been up to, you ask?</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-L66dINAYzWo/TZ9Eq0ZYbBI/AAAAAAAABVE/3KU6EsqfJOA/s1600/photo111.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="298" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-L66dINAYzWo/TZ9Eq0ZYbBI/AAAAAAAABVE/3KU6EsqfJOA/s400/photo111.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">We're up to our elbows in chickens!!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">We've thought about getting chickens for quite some time (over a year really) and finally said let's do it! It's been pretty busy around here between a rabbit, a bird, 3 dogs, and now.... 6 chickens. Cleveland passed a new ordinance a couple years ago that allows us to have up to 6 chickens so that's what we've been doing recently. Building a coop,. preparing the yard, and starting to teach the pups that chickens are not food! The chicks are just over a week old now and growing fast!</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"> I've been blogging about the chicken adventures taking place at our house for the past few weeks, so if you care to see what it's like adding chickens into your life (or how we got started) you can check it out at:</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://clevelandchickens.blogspot.com/"><span style="font-size: large;">http://clevelandchickens.blogspot.com</span></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">As far as Darby & Bailey, they are doing well. With the weather getting nicer Bailey likes to stay outside as much as possible. She chases squirrels back & forth all day long... but it keeps her busy :) Darby likes to be inside... go figure??</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"> I'm going to start desensitizing them to the birds this week so we'll see how it goes!? Bailey has a pretty strong prey drive so we'll just have to see.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"> Our daughter (Izzy) is going to be posting on this blog as well. She loves to blog and take pictures with her phone so watch out! </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />

Amy brought up a good point the other day...I post too many pictures of Bailey and not enough of Darby. Well, Bailey is much more photogenic while Darby on the other hand... want nothing to do with pictures. Like clockwork, when I pull out the camera and aim it on Darby she turns her head! EVERY SINGLE TIME! Bailey on the other had, well she's a diva!<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">There is something I just love about shooting in natural light....</div>Seanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06063540936979928724noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4736971304720448145.post-31967910141971841722011-02-06T08:39:00.000-05:002011-02-06T08:39:52.779-05:00Shark Eyes<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" h5="true" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_hEVEqVHPAA8/TU31QFnq_gI/AAAAAAAABQ4/BAKLaqDC46M/s400/shark_eyes.jpg" width="266" /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Darby with "Shark Eyes"</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"> Is it just Darby or does your Weim get what we like to call "shark eyes" when mad? I call it shark eyes because her pupils get really large and coal black. If you get in her space while she's laying down, look out! Or in the case of the pictures above Bailey was getting on her nerves so Darby turned into JAWS!<br />
<br />
Anyway, that's all I got today... C'mon Susummertime!</div>Seanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06063540936979928724noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4736971304720448145.post-72309693816477641832011-02-04T16:35:00.001-05:002011-02-04T16:35:53.269-05:00Our Clan....<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_hEVEqVHPAA8/TUxvF2OzxJI/AAAAAAAABQ0/aE8qGpqL4iY/s1600/Glacier.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" h5="true" height="265" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_hEVEqVHPAA8/TUxvF2OzxJI/AAAAAAAABQ0/aE8qGpqL4iY/s400/Glacier.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div align="center">Bailey - Glacier - Darby</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Here is our entire clan... I know, you normally do not see Glacier but she's old... and blind for the most part. As you can see in this picture she's not even looking at me :( </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Glacier has been with us since she's about 12 wks old and she is now 13... We know she'll not be with us much longer and it's really going to hurt when that day comes. She's been an amazing part of our family for many years. I just wanted to share this with you today.... I feel that time is coming soon and it's so hard to make that decision... Just when I think it's time, she kicks back in and tells us no. </div>Seanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06063540936979928724noreply@blogger.com3
